Biography - Nirpal Singh Shergill
Mr. Shergill is a citizen of India and resident of UK since 1966. Though settled in London, he is a frequent visitor to India. He belongs to Patiala district, Punjab and was educated in both India and the UK. He is a strong believer in Indo-British business partnerships on equality basis and has written a number of articles on various issues concerning the NRIs in the UK, Canada, USA and other countries.
In 1981, he started his career in journalism by publishing a monthly magazine in London, about Indian political issues titled, 'The Politics'. He later started writing in Punjabi and became a freelance writer. Mr.Shergill has written over 1000 articles on Indians abroad, racism, terrorism, extremism, separatism, immigration and emigration. With the help of his writings, he has been working as a bridge between the Punjabis living abroad and in India. He brings into focus the Sikh history, beginning from the journey of Guru Nanak Dev to Baghdad, to the post-independent migration of the Sikhs looking for greener pastures.
He has visited several countries, collecting data for his book, 'Indians Abroad and the Punjab Impact', an international directory of prominent Indians, especially Punjabis, settled in various parts of the world. This international publication is now in its 13th edition and has expanded to include addresses of all embassies and high commissions in New Delhi, Indian diplomatic missions abroad, investigative and analytical articles contributed by persons specialising in the Indian Diaspora and other information regarding India and the European Union. It also highlights the new developments in the Indo-European relations and the India-UK business partnership.
Mr.Shergill is also a self-employed businessman and direct importer from India for over 25 years. Catering to over 20 lac Asians living in Britain, his cultural, bridal and festival goods are all imported by air and on average a consignment every 60 days is received.
Mr Shergill regularly participates in international seminars and conferences such as, '20th Century Immigration and Immigrant Literature', held at Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar in January, 2005 , 'Development of Punjabi journalism' in Punjabi university, Patiala in 2006 and 2007 and 'Media accountability' organised by the Public Relation society of India at Punjab University, Chandigarh in march, 2007. He is often invited to speak about current affairs on television and radios in the UK, Canada and India.
